How it Works
UWI for eIDAS
UWI gives organizations the standards-based infrastructure to issue and verify credentials within the EUDI Wallet ecosystem, positioning them as trusted participants from day one. Whether in financial services, telecommunications, or public services, organizations can rely on UWI to issue credentials directly into the user’s wallet and verify presented credentials seamlessly.
Where the system breaks down today
The Privacy Barrier
of consumers say they would be more likely to use Digital Wallets if it could confirm a single detail, like age, without revealing their full identity. Today's identity checks typically demand far more data than the interaction requires.
Complexity kills Conversion
of European consumers say they often abandon a transaction when processes are too complex or take too long. For any regulated business that depends on converting prospects into customers, this is a big revenue and compliance problem.
Transparency over Speed
of the EUDI Wallet Consumer survey respondents have said that greater control over what data they disclose is of central importance, while 29% want more transparency and the ability to track what data is being used.

How Does UWI Help Different Sectors
Financial Services
UWI gives financial institutions the infrastructure to verify identity directly from a citizen's EUDI Wallet.
As an issuer, credentials such as proof of account ownership can be issued directly into a user’s wallet, opening new ways to engage customers and build services around trusted data.
As a verifier, onboarding becomes faster, KYC costs fall, fraud risk drops at the point of entry, and outdated credentials can be flagged and refused.

Telecommunications
UWI provides telecoms providers with a standards-based way to connect to the EUDI Wallet ecosystem.
As an issuer, credentials such as SIM registration or proof of active subscription can be issued directly into a user's wallet, removing the need for repeated identity checks across channels and markets.
As a verifier, customer onboarding becomes faster, synthetic identity fraud drops at the point of registration, and credentials can be revoked when the subscription is suspended or terminated.
Public Services
Public services organizations can use UWI to issue and verify credentials directly through the EUDI Wallet.
As issuers, universities can issue academic records and government authorities can issue national identity credentials directly into the user’s wallet.
As verifiers, a public administration office can process a passport or driving license renewal by requesting only the selected details needed, and universities can confirm student qualifications directly from academic records held in the wallet.

How can UWI Power the EUDI Wallet Ecosystem
Frequently Asked Questions
No. UWI does not replace the EUDI Wallet or the eIDAS framework. It gives organizations the standards-based infrastructure to connect to the ecosystem - issuing credentials into wallets and verifying the ones users present.
UWI enables four things:
Issuing credentials in verifiable form directly into a user's EUDI Wallet.
Verifying credentials users present, confirming they are genuine and current.
Managing credential expiry and revocation systematically, so outdated credentials stop being accepted.
Enabling consent-based data sharing, so organizations collect only what each service actually needs.
UWI is built on open standards and is designed to connect to existing systems without replacing them. It adds the trust layer to systems already in place rather than requiring a new platform to be built from scratch.
A credential issued in one EU member state can be presented and verified in another. UWI gives the receiving organization a standards-based way to verify that credential without paper checks, manual processing, or contacting the original issuing authority.
UWI is privacy-preserving by design. Credentials are held in a wallet the user controls. Nothing is shared without the user's explicit consent, and organizations receive only the data their service actually needs - nothing more.
